Co-sleeping — when babies and young children share a bed with one or both of their parents — has now been linked to reduced obesity . According to a new Danish study, children who regularly co-sleep with their parents are 70-percent less likely to be overweight when compared to kids who never sleep with their parents. So what’s behind the correlation? Although researchers aren’t clear on why the co-sleepers were slimmer, they have some theories, such as kids who co-sleep may have a greater sense of emotional support, whereas children who are not allowed to sleep with their parents may feel rejected, and in turn, negative feelings may increase the risk of obesity.
Enrico Iascone Architects designed this home in Sassuolo, Italy. . Description from the architects: The design of the building would enable the construction of two buildings in a single compact volume. It is so designed to cut a box, a closed volume, which bifurcates into two separated to create two separate units, each with its own garden and no introspection. The rooms of the house are arranged around the patio, allowing the penetration of light into the core of the house. Start with any inexpensive or gently worn brown purse that could use an update. Cut out the patches of leather you'll need to create the owl's wings and feathers and attach them with E-6000 glue.
Pedro García: Spring/Summer 2012. Having never bought Spanish shoes before, this week, I ventured to a new-to-me shop within my favorite area of the city, filled with only Spanish designed and made shoes. Espadrilles, sky high heels with tassels, the most elegant athletic shoes in cream, simple leather sandals with just enough detail, perfect for the Summer weekends. There were too many beautiful styles. And so, my shopping partner and I left with a few bags of beautiful shoes… I, with a new pair of buttery suede wedges, and she, athletic shoes, comfortable and sandals and gorgeous heels. And at that point I knew it—I have completely fallen for Spanish shoes… And these beautiful Spanish shoes, by Pedro García , I have yet to see, but am most curious about—particularly those sitting within the large oval window. Have you happened upon some gorgeous shoes as of late for Summer? Shoes you just couldn't even consider putting down? Images: 01—12, 14 via Pedro García | 13, 15 originally discovered via Retail Design Blog + work by: Clase BCN | video: youtube

Patience has never been one of my virtues. I was one of those kids who thought nothing could be better than joining the grown-up world, and I've only recently figured out why. Because I'm not only impatient, I'm anxious. I just wanted to know that everything would work out, and for as long as I can remember owning a home was the ultimate signifier of that. When you own a home, with its foundation and walls, you are quite literally, settled. I'm just starting to grasp the silliness of this whole concept, but it doesn't mean I don't get frustrated by the fact that I still live in my college apartment, a rental. I'd like to think it's a hell of a lot nicer than when I moved in here almost seven years ago, but it still feels like a total loss of momentum. I think my time in this place is coming to an end, but while I'm here, I just try to make the best of what I have, adding little flourishes, or as I like to think of them, grace notes, to the things I can't really change. Like this beat up radiator. Or the windows that never look clean, no matter how hard I scrub them. Adding a peony in full bloom to the radiator, resting a favorite Picasso print against that dirty window, it just feels hopeful. Can any of you relate? Image by me (Jenn Lore)

Grace Notes
from noreply@blogger.com (Jenn @ Dear Heart)

Excerpt:
Patience has never been one of my virtues. I was one of those kids who thought nothing could be better than joining the grown-up world, and I’ve only recently figured out why. Because I’m not only impatient, I’m anxious. I just wanted to know that everything would work out, and for as long as I can remember owning a home was the ultimate signifier of that. When you own a home, with its foundation and walls, you are quite literally, settled. I’m just starting to grasp the silliness of this whole concept, but it doesn’t mean I don’t get frustrated by the fact that I still live in my college apartment, a rental. I’d like to think it’s a hell of a lot nicer than when I moved in here almost seven years ago, but it still feels like a total loss of momentum. I think my time in this place is coming to an end, but while I’m here, I just try to make the best of what I have, adding little flourishes, or as I like to think of them, grace notes, to the things I can’t really change. Like this beat up radiator. Or the windows that never look clean, no matter how hard I scrub them. Adding a peony in full bloom to the radiator, resting a favorite Picasso print against that dirty window, it just feels hopeful. Can any of you relate? Image by me (Jenn Lore)

Have a pressing kitchen design question? For the next 48 hours, Jerome Buttrick of Buttrick Wong Architects , a member of the Remodelista Architect and Designer Directory , is on call to answer your queries. If you've survived a kitchen remodel (or a start-from-scratch project), you know the complexities—and the value of an architect's input. Here's a chance to learn from the expert; post your questions in the comments section below. Buttrick is a veteran of at least 50 kitchen projects, both remodels and new builds (including Remodelista editor Julie's kitchen). A NYC native, Buttrick studied architectural history at Northwestern, got his degree in architecture at Harvard, and now lives and works in Oakland (fun fact: he's the great grandson of Stanford White—how's that for pedigree?). For a recent kitchen remodel in the Rockridge area of Oakland, Buttrick worked with a client to accommodate a hectic and informal lifestyle. The problem? A too-small kitchen, unconnected to the living spaces of the house. The solution? An expanded indoor/outdoor kitchen and dining space (incorporating a small office area) that opens to the garden. Above: The pantry provides overflow for storage (and a clever location for a refrigerator) as well as an additional sink and a pair of dishwashers; leaving as much working counter space in the main kitchen as possible. Above: Buttrick created a clever integrated drain board, freeing up counter space for food preparation. Above: Buttrick used glass tiles from Ann Sacks on the walls and a hard limestone for the counter tops. The glass apothecary-style cabinets add a sense of lightness and serve as display cases. Above: While Buttrick provided the family of serious cooks with a functional kitchen, he wanted to avoid a predictable kitchen. He moved the refrigerator to the pantry and used key furniture elements (a custom built-sideboard, which is integral to the kitchen island; tall apothecary glazed cabinets) to reduce the overall "kitchen read." Above: A small office area in the kitchen remains in keeping with the rest of the design. Above: The opening to the rear garden is 18 feet wide, and Buttrick installed a full-height, wooden folding door to maximize the sense of indoor/outdoor flow. Single pane leaded glass at the top of the doors recalls the Craftsman details in the hall and stair.
